AI for nonprofits

Adopt AI safely, with rules sized for your organization

As a healthcare CIO, I know what responsible AI adoption takes: a policy, a review process, the right agreements and staff who know the rules. I bring that approach, sized down, to nonprofits and small businesses.

What I help with

AI use policyApproved tools, data that never goes in and who reviews the results.
Tool intake and approvalA simple way for staff to request a new AI tool.
Copilot readinessFind and fix oversharing before AI assistants go live.
Pilot and trainingA small pilot, practical training and a decision based on results.
AI in daily workConnecting AI to the systems you already use, like a food distributor I am helping now.
Governance for health dataApproval paths and agreements when sensitive data is involved.

Why one of you

I am not here to sell you a product. My US career began at a community energy agency in 2005. When I left for biotech, no replacement could do the job, so they brought me back as a consultant, and I have served them ever since. I fix problems at the root, give the full equipment list with no markup, and do not walk away when the budget does.

Real cases

Food distribution

From paper to an automated food distributor

Situation
A food distributor ran on paper. Sales reps carried printed inventory lists for every customer, photographed the marked pages and emailed them to an intake person, who typed every order into QuickBooks. Inventory was tracked by hand.
What was done
Replaced the paper with iPads, added barcodes to inventory, and built a website that syncs inventory from QuickBooks. Installed the servers, remote access and network so the team can work in QuickBooks together. When money was tight, I lowered my costs, never the service.
Result
Orders and inventory flow without retyping, and the business grew from a small warehouse with the systems to match. Now I am helping the owner bring AI into the business, connecting the tools and teaching the team to use them. He started as a client and is now one of my longest friends.
Community action

Agencies facing a statewide MFA requirement

Situation
Energy assistance agencies across California must use MFA for ServTraq and CALIHEAPApply starting in January.
What was done
Spoke at the ServTraq Innovation Summit on why security starts with MFA, and published a free readiness checklist for agencies.
Result
Agencies have a free, practical checklist to get their staff ready ahead of the deadline.

Questions people ask

Can staff use ChatGPT or other AI tools at work?

Yes, with a simple policy first: which tools are approved, what data must never be pasted into them, and a person who reviews anything that goes out. Without a policy, staff will use AI anyway, just without guardrails.

Is Microsoft 365 Copilot safe to turn on?

Copilot can only show people what they already have access to. The risk is that many organizations share more than they realize. Clean up oversharing and permissions first, then pilot with a small group.

Can we use AI tools with patient or client data?

Only with tools approved through your governance process and covered by the right agreements, such as a BAA for health data. That decision belongs with your compliance lead and legal counsel. I help build the process that gets you there.

Is it OK to use AI notetakers in meetings?

Be careful. California generally requires everyone on a call to agree before it is recorded, so announce it every time. Use an approved tool, know where transcripts are stored, and keep notetakers out of meetings about clients or patients unless that use has been approved.
